So you’ve got a dumbphone or you're planning to get one and you want to make the most out of it. I have some sort of experience with these devices so hopefully I can help.
I’d like to stress the importance of 3g and 2g shutdowns. Make sure you can use the phone you get/have on modern cellular networks in your country. This might limit you to newer phones depending on where you live.
There are 4 tiers of dumbphones in my eyes.
Tier 1 (show the e-ink phone) has contacts, calls and maybe even texts if you have a later model, not much to talk about. (1983-mid 2000s)
Tier 2 has basic features like a calculator, notes, sometimes even a game and basic multimedia playback. (1990-now)
Tier 3 has more advanced features such as a game or 2, alarm clock, timer, stop watch, camera and a web browser if you ask very nicely. (2000s-now)
Tier 4 phones have the ability to install 3rd party apps and usually run Symbian, KaiOS or Android. (2004-now)
Even though you may be using a dumbphone to get away from all of the notifications, there are still people who should still be able to get to you. Make sure that friends and family know how to contact you. There will be times where people will need to get ahold of you for example, a medical emergency.
More feature phones than you’d expect have a web browser. Typically they have a version of opera mini. If your built in browser isn't good enough you can still download opera mini at m.opera.com. Because the last major update is from 2012, you’re quite limited on what websites you can visit. Despite this, there are still websites being made for old phones to this day.
Text based google maps (gdir.telae.net) - Displays a route from google maps in a simple text based manner.
Discord wap (gtrxac.fi/wap) - You will have to somehow get your discord token onto your phone (this will differ from device to device). Using a third party client can get your account Discord banned.
Frog find (frogfind.com) - A search engine that simplifies new websites to work on old devices.
1xBTS speedtest (speed.1xbts.org/) - Low speed and simple internet speed test.
Gognet (gognet.co.uk) - The website you're currently on. Everything here should load on a dumb phone.
If the most you need can be done in a very basic web browser then I’d recommend something new with 4g. Having 4g is good future proofing if you want to use the phone in the long run. I’d recommend something from hmd, do double check to make sure you’re getting a phone with 4g and a web browser. 4g will usually be in the name and you can check reviews to see if it has a browser.
You can also use any of the more advance phones I mention later in this guide but they might not have 4G unless specified.
J2me is a cutdown version of the java app runtime made from 1999-2008 and is commonly found on phones from 2004-2011. It was the dominant platform for apps and games on phones. Blackberry, Nokia, Siemens, Samsung and many more companies made j2me enabled phones, even a few early android phones had j2me. Because of the widespread popularity, there are still apps being developed for j2me to this day.
Google maps j2me (2.3.2) - Official google maps client that still works, I wouldn’t trust it with my life but it's nice to have.
Google maps j2me (3.0.2) - Official google maps client, i couldn’t get it to work but it might on your phone, I wouldn’t trust it with my life but it's nice to have.
Discord j2me - An actively developed discord client for java phones, it's not official so your account might get banned if you use it. It also offers QR code login so you don't have to extract your discord token.
Opera mini - Most phones with j2me already have a web browser preinstalled but if yours doesn't or the browser is a bit naff then you can download opera mini.
There is a whole world of j2me content just sitting online, all you need to do is find it. Some apps and games require certain resolutions/phone models, it doesn't have to match your phone model/specs but its best to get as close as you can. Remember to use common sense as some of the content may have malware or require servers that aren't around anymore.
Most phones from from 2004-2011 can run j2me apps and I havent come across one that is too slow to run what I want but its always best to check online, GSMArea should say if a phone has j2me support under the java section and I have a JBenchmark leaderboard so you can see how fast some phones are.
